The dilemma; moving to a new area of Sheffield and trying to
find a local which is equally free from students in jogging bottoms and old men
in flat caps. The solution; The Broadfield, Abbeydale Road. A pub which effortlessly
toes the line between trendy and traditional, as first-jobbers unable to stay
out after 11pm on weekdays we stumbled on The Broadfield while looking for a
pub quiz, and I’m not ashamed to say it’s pretty much become the highlight of my
week.
The pub is always busy, there is a ridiculously extensive collection of whiskies and other spirits as well as local draught beer and cider, and the décor full of interesting artefacts, making the place quaint and kitsch without being pretentious. As with most of the Forum Café Bars collection of venues, there a great mix of clientele, from beardy hipsters drinking bottles of European lager to middle-aged Yorkshiremen (and women) nursing pints of ale.
I’m always on the lookout for places which serve actual
vegan options, rather than having to ask for a jacket potato with beans or a
cheeseless pizza AGAIN, so I loved that there was a tasty chickpea tagine with
mushroom cous cous clearly labelled on the menu as vegan, which was so good
even the omnivores wanted a try. And they do infamously huge pies which I'm informed are also fab. Definitely worth straying out the city centre
for if you’re into quality booze and food without the snobby welcome you get
with some pubs.
Oh, and we only went and won the fucking quiz.
