The Rude Shipyard, Abbeydale Road

One of my favourite things about where I live in Sheffield is how many prosperous local businesses and successful not-for-profits there are in the area. Past the neon glow of London Road, at the edge of the newly-coined 'Antiques Quarter' (due to the number of antique dealers and bric-a-brac shops on Abbeydale Road and the surrounding streets) is The Rude Shipyard

Inside the tiny shop are shelves and shelves of second-hand books, CDs for sale by local artists and even handmade musical instruments. They even hold whisky tastings and a book club. But best of all is the food. Veggies and vegans (as well as meat eaters!) are well catered for, and their menu includes homemade cakes, sandwiches bursting with local ingredients and fresh-baked pies and pizzas. A hearty all-day breakfast costs just £6, and tea and coffee starts from £1 to take-away.

Tea set: Unfortunately I was too hungry to wait to photograph the food...

Last Sunday I went for breakfast for the second time, and I'm pretty sure there is no better way to spend a winter's morning. A cosy sofa with a pot of tea, stuffed full of food (inlcuding an AMAZING vegan peanut butter cake, which I nabbed the last slice of), listening to Jimi Hendrix and perusing a copy of Now Then. The staff are friendly and accommodating and clearly have great taste in food, music and reading materials. We lounged, still recovering from the night before, for nearly 3 hours without feeling obliged to move on, and although downstairs is sometimes crowded, I'm assured there is more space upstairs.

A true gem, a great example of a co-operative enterprise and I hope they continue to be successful in the future. Places like this are good for the soul, although possibly not so good for my waistline...
