Drenge are an exciting two-piece band based in Sheffield
(well, Castleton technically), out to prove that the Peak District isn’t just
about miners in flat caps. Described by The Guardian as Derbyshire’s answer to
the Black Keys, brothers Eoin (Guitar and Vocals) and Rory (Drums) also cite
White Stripes as a main influence, and have been spurred on by fellow South
Yorkshire duo Wet Nuns (with whom they’ve had connections with since
childhood).
The band’s laidback, DIY style and attitude are a perfect
fit with their garage-punk noise. The tracks are short and speedy, but still
pack an aural punch. Drenge are at their best when they play live, when they
can really let rip and bring their uniquely disordered sound to life;
surprisingly gravelly vocals with snarling guitars and relentless drumbeat.
Drenge are currently co-headlining a tour with Deap Vally,
and spent the latter part of last year on the road with Mystery Jets. Their
debut single ‘Bloodsports’ (released 4th March on Infectious) has even had
airplay on Radio 1, and we’re talking daytime, not some obscure rock show at
3am. The low-key video was filmed at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium (perhaps
fuelling the stereotype that they do love nothing more than a good whippet race
round these parts). Drenge look set to have a great year ahead of them, and are
proof that the South Yorkshire music scene is truly alive and kicking.
